Did you know that October 15 is Mushroom Day in Japan?
I'm a big fan of mushrooms! I enjoy all kinds of mushroom dishes, and I thought this would be a fun topic to share with you as part of my little journey into everyday life and food in Japan.
I love mushrooms in so many dishes. I especially like button mushrooms in salads and creamy stews. They add a lovely flavor and texture, and they go well with all sorts of ingredients.
Japan has many kinds of mushrooms, too. Some of my favorites are maitake and shimeji. They are great in soups, rice dishes, stir-fries, and hot pots, especially when the weather gets cooler.
October is a lovely time to enjoy autumn flavors in Japan, and mushrooms are a big part of that seasonal feeling.
Maitake mushrooms have a distinctive shape and a rich, savory flavor. Shimeji mushrooms are small and grow in clusters, with a pleasant texture that works well in many dishes.
You can find these mushrooms in Japanese supermarkets, but I'm curious about how easy they are to find in other countries.
Have you ever tried maitake or shimeji? Are they common where you live, or are they difficult to find?
One thing I really enjoy about Japanese cooking is the use of dashi, a stock that adds depth and umami to food.
Dried shiitake mushrooms can be used to make a flavorful stock. The taste is rich and earthy, and it brings a wonderful savory quality to soups and other dishes.
But I'm curious about something: do people outside Japan enjoy shiitake dashi, too? If you're used to Western-style soups and stocks, would you enjoy this kind of mushroom flavor?
I would love to know what kinds of mushrooms you enjoy eating. Do you like them in salads, pasta, soups, or stews? Maybe you have a favorite mushroom dish from your own country.
Leave a comment and tell me about it! It's always interesting to learn about food and everyday life in different parts of the world.
Thanks for stopping by, and happy Mushroom Day!
